Why Scotland???? Because of the weather!
This is the question that guests have asked us thousands of times since we started our new venture in Scotland in May 1995.
We fell in love with Scotland after first visiting some 20 years ago. It may sound strange, but when we came back here, it felt like we were coming home. Everyone was so friendly and laid back that we just felt very much at home and returned several times after that.
It was Mieke's dream to open a guest house, but Bert didn't take her too seriously at first! He was a PR and advertising manager, and Mieke was working as a secretary. We had a nice house, big car and Bert had his motorbike - our lives in the Netherlands could be described as very comfortable.
But.... money wasn't everything. Our jobs were stressful, we lived in a very densely populated area and we began to wonder if we just had to carry on like this until we retired.
Living in Scotland with its scenery, and peace and quiet became a very attractive idea
and once our decision was made, we pulled out all the stops to make our dream come true.
And now when guests ask if we are homesick, all we do is point to the mountains and tell them that no-one could feel homesick in this beautiful country!
With our previous experience working in an international company and as a secretary, our multi-lingual skills are very useful when meeting visitors from all over the world.
We endeavour to greet all our overseas guests in their own language whatever country they are from.
We certainly have no regrets about moving to Scotland and we truly enjoy welcoming people to Lochan Cottage and making them feel at home here.
